Reflections on IATC Round 1: A Journey of Throws and Camaraderie

This past weekend marked the commencement of the highly anticipated 2024 IATC, and I had the privilege of participating in Round 1—an experience that proved both exhilarating and humbling in equal measure.

As I stepped onto the throwing floor, nerves tingling with anticipation, I knew that this would be a test of both skill and fortitude. Having transitioned from WATL to IATF, I approached the event with a blend of excitement and trepidation, eager to put my newfound expertise to the test.

Round 1, with its 75 throws of the hatchet and 15 throws of the big axe, promised to be a grueling ordeal—a true test of endurance and precision. Yet, as the throws unfolded, I found myself settling into a rhythm, each axe finding its mark with a satisfying thud.

Across 75 throws, my performance was commendable, with scores ranging from 71 to 77—an average of 73.6. While my peers expressed confidence in my qualification for Round 2, I remained cautiously optimistic, knowing that the final results would reveal the truth.

Yet, amidst the thrill of competition, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of empathy for my fellow throwers who struggled to find their footing. As much as I yearned to alleviate their disappointment, I understood that such trials were an inevitable part of the journey—a shared experience that bound us together as a community.

Looking ahead, I await the outcome of Round 1 with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension. Should I advance to Round 2, the path forward will be clear—a continued pursuit of excellence and camaraderie. However, should fate dictate otherwise, I stand ready to embrace the challenge anew, perhaps even venturing into the “Close But No Cigar” tournament—a testament to resilience and determination.

In closing, I extend heartfelt gratitude to the vibrant community of throwers in the Charlotte, NC area, whose unwavering support and encouragement propel me to greater heights with each throw. Together, we forge bonds of friendship and sportsmanship, ensuring that the thrill of the game remains as vibrant and exhilarating as ever.
